Movie stuff

I’ve recently tried a couple of online dvd rental services and am playing catchup with some films, and an awful lot of X-files that I wanted to watch on TV but somehow never managed to get around to.

For the record I tried Blockbuster online and currently use Screenselect. Overall a pretty decent service from both. No problems when discs go missing or the wrong one is sent (each has happened once over 4 months). Easy to use and no problems so far. Recommended.

So to the films. Here are some short comments on stuff I’ve seen recently.

Spiderman 2: Decent film shock! Character orientated storyline, decent bad guy, cool effects. Much better than I was expecting and not so much of the ‘set piece, dialogue. set piece, dialogue. weak ending’ I was expecting.

Starsky and Hutch: Dire. No, thats too positive. Truly the worst film I’ve seen for a long time. I think ‘Meet the Fockers 2’ might give it a run for it’s money but I’ll never know. This was so terrible I didn’t even watch it all. Makes Charlies Angels look pretty deep, ouch!

Our House: As above. Not a good week for Mr Stiller.

X-Files Final Series: Pretty decent finale. They were never going to be able to wrap it up to meet everyone’s expectations but with that in mind they did a good job. Some excellent ‘monster of the week’ episodes and some good conspiracy stuff. Doggett and Reves make great replacements for the Mulder and Scully duo. Overall, superior television and far better than most of the Hollywood films out there.

Hero: Style over content is what a friend reckoned, but the’re wrong! Beautifully shot, amazing effects and set pieces, and an interesting story told in an unusual way. Ancient oriental fuedal storyline with intriguing twists and awesome swordplay. Top film. Looking forward to House of Flying Daggers.

Now if only I could get hold of My So Called Life. But at £150+ it’s not looking likely.

I thought Hero was a case of style over content as well ( altho agree has some of the best cinematography ive seen), much preferred House of Flyin Daggers. another one to keep your eyes out for is Ku Fu Hustle – Acme humour with lots of Kung Fu – very funny and very well shot.

Hmm. All very well and good, but where’s the review for current stuff? Most important question: does War of the Worlds work without Jeff Wayne in the background??? I need answers*!

(*and lots of help, apparently…)

Great! The single speaker on the front of my Mac will really do that justice ;-)

Went to town today to buy the special Jeff Wayne box set (7 CDs/DVDs) but the display one was the only example left. Gawd! Didn’t they realise I was more anal retentive than that??? Me NEED to unwrap that cellophane – not some gimp behind the desk… bah!

Aren’t you confusing Tom Cruise for Jeff Wayne? Or am I confusing War of the Worlds for Dark Side of the Moon?

lost me after ‘Aren’t’
