It’s hopeless isn’t it.
Stuff like this drives me mad especially when it’s a ‘government’ organisation who presumably have a decent budget. There are many sites out there with tiny bugets who manage far ber than this.
No Disaster Relief For Browser CompatibilityThis is well covered on sites such as Boing Boing, but if you wanted a stark indictment of the problems of ‘browser specific’ websites then look no further than FEMA, the US Federal Emergency Management Agency handling the disaster in the southern states of the US. To register for disaster assistance online you have to go through a section of the FEMA website. Unfortunately not only do you need a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+, you also need javascript enabled, and you have to go through an anti-bot security method where you enter characters to confirm you can view a deformed image on screen. So not only do you need a specific manufacturers software product, you also need specific functionality enabled within that product, and good eyesite. No visually disadvantaged or screen readers here please. Sure you can of course phone them but the point is there is no excuse for such a crippled online support system. I would also be surprised if this was actually legal under US government website accessibility guidelines. Excellent coding standards for websites already exist. This is nothing more or less than lazy and/or uninformed coding, pure and simple. We need standards support so everyone can use public services, not just Microsoft customers. Pathetic. Shame on you. To do some good you could try the following organisations: » Red Cross wp:pic src=”ie_only.gif” cap=”What Standards?” -> Comments...

What is the third character supposed to be? an i or an r?
Never mind screen readers, anyone with slightly iffy eye sight is going to have a hell of a time.
