Apple Macs and Windows SharingMost of us freelancers know, through necessity (ok,ok geekiness!), that Macs and Windows machines play nicely together most of the time; that compatibility is no longer a reason to stick with Windows if you really fancy some Mac action in your life. We also know about Apple’s switch campaign and information about moving between platforms. Switch has now moved into ‘Ten Reasons’, addresssing the common issues people have concerns about But today I happened upon a page devoted to Windows networking. A nice little overview of networking and file/printer/disc sharing between platforms. There’s information on keeping Apple mail up to date with your companies Miscrosoft Exchange server, along with the built in VPN functions in Tiger and Active Directory support. This is not big news, but it does demonstrate how far Macs and Windows have come when it comes to sharing resources on networks. As it says on the switch page… Your toaster doesn’t crash. Your kitchen sink doesn’t crash. Why should your computer? With the industrial-strength Mac OS X, you’ll become accustomed to a computer operating system that crashes about as often as a paperback book. Which is to say almost never. There’s now plenty of well written and thoughtfully constructed information on the Mac OS X section of the Apple website, general compatibility, network compatibility and the Windows Compatibility section mentioned above, amongst much more.
