MacWorld Revisited

Ok, I’ll keep this short.

That was dull.

AppleTV is quite nice, but let’s face it, with no movies or TV on iTunes in the UK it’s an expensive toy. Especially with Apple’s idea of the exchange rate.

iPhone. Very slick, but no US launch til the summer means no UK launch until 2008/9/10. And, even if it is launched this year over here, it’s still mother fucking expensive at £599 (yeah, that’s about Apples take $1==£1).

So, two expensive, geographically limited toys. Better than Bill’s CES speech but I don’t live in the states and earn shit loads of money.

Still, on the other hand, I am looking forward to my run tomorrow down by the canal, and I’m excited about the beta tests of My Big Idea™!

Something very strange happened. I haven’t yet managed to see ol’ Steve’s keynote speech yet, but I did have a quick look at the Apple site.

Wow! I have to disagree with you here. You know that my hatred for mobile is legendary and that I consider last year’s £10 top up of pay-as-you-go brick criminal, but I LOVED the preview of the new phone! Probably because it is a phone in passing, but is really the slickest mini mini mini postable on earth! The demo on their site was amazing.

I know it’s expensive, but…... and this shocks me as well…... I am almost tempted! :-|

Right – I’m off to beat myself around the head to make reality return.

Night, night.

Don’t get me wrong – it looks very slick and funky and may well change the face of the ‘smart’ phone market. I’m just not excited about something I can’t afford, and am unlikely to get my hands on for roughly a year at best!

I can see this possibly also being a big step for Apple in the business sector, just like the Blackberry has done for RIM. Either that or the bling hip hop rap stars will be touting them!

I’d like to see v2 with 3g, removable battery and decent amount of memory – 4/8gb is just not enough for photos/music/email and film. Interesting that Apple (had to?) do a deal with a carrier and not release this SIM free, but then, what do I know!

Did he say the price included a 2 yr contract? Makes the price more bearable, but 2 years, holy cow! I thought being shackled to Orange for 18 months with my new phone was criminal – yeah, it was my ‘choice’ but the phones co’s screw you whatever you do.

Apple TV is okay but the lack of DVD player seems like a odd choice at this point in time, especially outside the states where movie/tv content is not available on itunes. Anyway, I don’t want to have to buy all the movies I own on DVD again in iTunes format so I can easily view them on Apple TV.

And since when has $299 = £199, when I checked today it should be about £154!

To sum up, both devices look cool, and I’m pleased that Apple is pushing boundries, innovating and looking to the future, it’s just that neither product is going to be much use in the UK for quite a while.

The change to Apple Inc was an interesting statement of intent too. Sony was already in trouble – I just hope Apple don’t diversify too much.

They must be confident about Leopard to not even mention it – bit disappointing but all part of the plan I’m sure.

I still need to see the whole webcast before I can really comment further. But I see your point of view. The matter of moving further from its core business (hardware/OS/software) does worry me, though.
